Nicky Enright, Footnotes, 2010-11 Interactive floor sculptures, vinyl on MDF, 2010 |
This work explores the construction and function of colloquial expressions by presenting foot-based idiomatic expressions in an interactive way. The sociopolitical implications embedded within these symbolic phrases are exposed and viewers are free to kick them around and create new combinations. These concepts are visualized in type and set in motion by the viewer’s own feet. The title implies a relegated status, as in "a footnote to history." But most of these phrases point at social and physical mobility, such as “best foot forward,” “foot in the door,” and “kicked out,” or the static lack of mobility signified by phrases like “equal footing,” “standoff,” and “toe the line.” |
