Nicky Enright, Pipeline Dream, 2017 PVC pipes & fittings on wall painting 21' x 9' |
Pipeline Dream is a wall painting and wall sculpture made out of PVC pipes and a variety of plumbing fixtures. This dreamlike wordplay references and merges multiple notions - from a “pipe dream,” to the controversial Keystone XL pipeline, to the “school-to-prison-pipeline,” and beyond. The work forms a shadow of reality that casts actual shadows. It is underpinned by a smoky gradation that evokes many ideas at once - the smoke of a crude oil pipeline, the smoke of “pipe dreams,” which is directly related to the mass incarceration of minority youth, and the smoke off the ashes of the resulting dashed dreams. |
