Nicky Enright, Subtitles for the Hearing Impaired, 5 min., 2010 This work is technically a video sculpture, but it is also a silent audio work. Neurologist Oliver Sacks says that imagining sounds is the same as hearing them as far as the brain is concerned. Therefore I have the viewer’s own brain supply the sounds with the subtitles as a guide. Drawn from films, these subtitles for the hearing impaired all reference sounds. This piece continues my experiments with the interconnectedness of image and sound. |
